A civil society organisation, Personal Data Protection Awareness Initiative, has submitted a petition to the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) against privacy violations by the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) in Abuja.

In the petition, The Organisation alleged that the VIO which handles driving and vehicle licence information of citizens, has failed to provide a privacy notice on its website or forms as required by the Nigeria Data Protection Act(NDPA) 2023.

It stated that this denies individuals information on how their personal data is used, processed and shared, thereby hampering their rights to control the usage of their data. The group also condemned VIO officials using personal mobile phones to verify vehicle licence validity on the roads.

The petition urges NDPC to direct VIO to deploy comprehensive privacy notices across platforms used for personal data processing, cease unlawful verification practices, strengthen their data protection practices , train staff on personal data handling, and take disciplinary action against violators.

It warned that failure to address the violations and align practices with data protection laws would force further legal action. VIO was given 30 days to respond with planned remedies.

Highlighting VIO’s strategic position and the trove of personal data it processes, the organization expressed hope for swift and decisive action from VIO to rectify its data protection deficiencies and respect Data Subjects’ privacy rights as guaranteed under NDPA.
