Justice Baba Gana Ashigar, a retired judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, has died.

The late Justice Ashigar reportedly died in the late hours of July 25, 2026, after a brief illness.

The Federal High Court spokesperson, Dr Catherine Oby Christopher, confirmed his death in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the retired jurist died in Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to the statement, Justice Ashigar was buried on July 26, 2026, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Federal High Court described him as a distinguished jurist who served with diligence, dedication, integrity and unwavering commitment to the administration of justice.

“Hon. Justice Baba Gana Ashigar, Rtd, was a distinguished jurist who served with diligence, dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the administration of justice,” the statement read.

The court said his contributions to the Bench and the legal profession would be fondly remembered by his colleagues, members of the outer Bar, court staff and all who had the privilege of working with him.

The Chief Judge, judges, management and staff of the Federal High Court extended their condolences to his immediate family and prayed for strength and fortitude for them to bear the loss.

“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement added.
