The House of Representatives has withdrawn its proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police in Nigeria, opting instead to consider a similar bill transmitted by the Executive.

The development occurred during Tuesday’s plenary, where lawmakers proceeded with the Executive-sponsored State Police Bill and passed it through first and second readings.

Following the debate, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative action.

The decision effectively places the House’s earlier proposal on hold, as lawmakers now shift attention to the Executive-backed version of the constitutional amendment.

The bill is expected to undergo detailed scrutiny at the committee stage, where members will examine its key provisions before it is returned to the floor of the House for further consideration.

The move forms part of ongoing efforts to amend the Constitution to provide a legal framework for state police amid growing calls for decentralised policing to address insecurity across the country.
