Professor Kharisu Sufyan Chukkol, a distinguished law scholar at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has passed away.

According to sources close to the Faculty of Law at ABU, Prof. Chukkol died late Sunday evening in Abuja. The cause of his death remains undisclosed at the time of this report.

The late professor will be laid to rest today (Monday) at 1:00 p.m. in Abuja. His funeral prayer is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at the Abuja National Mosque.

Prof. Chukkol was a prolific author in the field of law, particularly in Criminal Law. Among his notable works is The Law of Crimes in Nigeria, a widely referenced text in legal academia and practice.

He served as Dean of the Faculty of Law at ABU from 1989 to 1990 and again from 1997 to 2001, as recorded on the faculty’s page on the university’s website.

Following the announcement of his passing, many of his former students and colleagues have expressed their condolences, highlighting his immense contributions to legal education in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, paid tribute to the late professor on his Facebook page, writing:

“I’m saddened by the news of the passing of my teacher and mentor, the erudite Professor of Criminal Law at ABU, Prof. Kharisu Chukkol. Prof. Chukkol was an impactful lecturer who shaped our youthful years as young students. When I returned to ABU later in my career, he also supervised my LLM dissertation. May Allah repose his soul, Amen.”

Similarly, the A.B.U. Zaria Online community mourned his passing, posting:

“The #Abusite family mourns the death of legendary Prof. K. S. Chukkol. He was an ICON of law and one of the foremost Criminal Law experts in Nigeria, who has trained countless Professors, Senior Judges, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, etc. He died today in Abuja after a protracted illness. May Almighty Allah SWT grant him Jannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Prof. Chukkol’s legacy as a legal luminary and mentor to generations of legal practitioners will be remembered for years to come. May his soul rest in peace.
