Admiralty Lawyers Society of Nigeria will be holding a capacity building course for lawyers interested in Admiralty practice.

The training which is slated to be held from Monday 21th to Tuesday 22nd March, in Abuja promises to be epoch making, the National President, Chukwuka Angus, said.

“It is the first time the program will hold in Abuja even though it has held in a couple of states in the country, like Rivers State and Akwa Ibom State.

“The course content will cover areas like Admiralty jurisdiction, bill of lading, charter parties, international convention, maritime claims and liens, arrest and release of ships, among others.

“The training is expected to attract both local and foreign legal practitioners.”

He also stated that both private legal practitioners and cooperate/ government lawyers have been factored in.


“Though the course fees differ. While private legal practitioners pay N150k government or corporate sponsored ones are to pay N250k.

“Meanwhile foreign legal practitioners have been billed 604.39 US Dollars.

Chukwuka added that the course fees cover only materials, lectures and refreshments in the course of the program and does not include accommodation or transportation.

Attendees are therefore required to Carter for those areas of need.

“Abuja has been chosen for this training so as to harness the skills of the lawyers practicing in Abuja and its environs.

“However, lawyers from different parts of the country are welcome.

“Indeed, some Lawyers outside Abuja have already indicated interest to attend. The program promises to be grand, ” he added.

To qualify to attend all that a prospective candidate requires is LLB and an interest in the law and practice of Admiralty.

He further stated that the call of the society is to build a body of immensely efficient and dependable Admiralty Lawyers who know their onions and are able to deliver on their clients’ briefs.

‘”Beyond that the society, being critical stakeholders in the maritime industry, are routinely involved in the development of maritime industry in Nigeria and beyond.

“Part of it’s objects is to influence and contribute to policy formulation and implementation in the area of Admiralty, to contribute towards legislative enactment and enforcement in the sector, to create a medium of interaction and synergy between lawyers and the governments, institutions, Organisations and individuals involved in maritime efforts and businesses.

“Above all the society aspires to directly and indirectly increase and enhance the maritime space In Nigeria, intellectually, practically and otherwise.

Meanwhile , the chairman of the Research & Training Faculty of the society, Professor Lucky Ibibia Worika, has pointed out that the training will qualify successful candidates for Associate Membership of the society. According to him, ” there would be more trainings for Associate Members till they graduate to the cadre of Fellows in the society.”

He continued ,” Maritime is a relatively untapped but lucrative area and any lawyer wishing to adventure into specialisation is encouraged to invest to build. Capacity in that area. It will not be a regrettable experience”.
