The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Gwagwalada Branch Law Week, held from March 27 to April 2, 2026, has continued to serve as a major platform for critical discussions on justice reform, institutional accountability, and rebuilding public confidence in Nigeria’s legal system. The week is themed “Rebuilding Public Trust in the Nigerian Legal System.”

A key highlight of the programme was the second plenary session, which focused on “Human Rights Protection, Access to Justice and Public Trust: Strengthening Accountability in Nigeria’s Legal System.” The session brought together eminent legal minds, including Professor Daniel Odeleye, Nnaebuka Nwaeze, Esq., and Mrs. Barbara Magaji, and was moderated by Bulus Y. Atsen, fsi.

Delivering the keynote address as Chairman of the session, Professor Odeleye provided an in-depth analysis of Nigeria’s human rights architecture, describing persistent gaps between constitutional guarantees and institutional realities. He called for urgent policy and institutional reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the justice system.

In his contribution, Nnaebuka Nwaeze, Esq. emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among justice sector stakeholders, stressing that fragmented approaches to justice delivery continue to undermine efficiency and accountability.

“The administration of justice cannot be fragmented,” Nwaeze stated. “The NBA is constitutionally positioned to work with stakeholders across the justice sector. What is required now is deliberate, strategic collaboration that delivers measurable outcomes.”

He noted that sustainable progress in the justice system depends on coordinated engagement between the Nigerian Bar Association, the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant institutions, adding that such synergy would enhance transparency, efficiency, and public trust.

Other contributors at the session, including Mrs. Barbara Magaji and a Judge of the High Court of the FCT sitting in Kwali, reinforced the judiciary’s critical role as a stabilizing institution within Nigeria’s democratic framework. They underscored the importance of the courts in upholding the rule of law amid evolving social and institutional challenges.

The session concluded with a shared understanding among participants that rebuilding public trust in the justice system requires sustained institutional commitment, leadership, and effective collaboration across all arms of the justice sector.
