The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to instruct all agencies handling land matters to expedite actions that protect property ownership, ensure peaceful possession, and enforce sanctions against land grabbers in the state.
The resolution followed the presentation of a report on a petition titled “Abuse of office, malicious destruction, land grabbing, and undue conversion of property against Aluko Olusegun, Vice-Chairman of Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area,” filed by Mr. Tijani Maruf Oludare.
The plenary session, presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, took place yesterday.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC, Mr. Oladipo Ajomale, said the committee conducted a thorough investigation. Stakeholders and relevant government agencies were invited for meetings, documents were requested from both parties, and the disputed land was physically inspected.
The committee found that a perimeter fence enclosing four plots of land had been constructed years ago, within which the contentious two plots were located. It was noted that Mr. Aluko Olusegun had failed to conduct proper verification of the land’s status from government agencies, relying instead on a purported Appeal Court judgment from the Oponuwa Ogunmolu family. Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had previously demolished structures on the site.
The committee recommended that Mr. Tijani Maruf, as the rightful owner with valid government documents, should take permanent possession of all four plots purchased from the Oponuwa Ogunmolu Adaraloye family branch at Igbo Agbowa village, Ikorodu. Conversely, Mr. Aluko Olusegun should immediately cease unlawful encroachment and construction on the two plots, in accordance with a recent High Court ruling of January 2025.
Mr. Akinsanya Nureni emphasized that Mr. Aluko should be sanctioned to deter others from attempting similar land disputes. Members of the House commended the committee for its work and advised that the rightful owner be allowed to enjoy his property peacefully.
The House unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations as its official resolution.
