He stated that “NBA is registered under part C of the CAMA like any other association of pepper sellers or religious or sport or cultural group. It is not a trade union hence does not have or enjoy any special status in law.” “The mention of and any privilege conferred on NBA in any statute must extend to any other association of lawyers otherwise it will offend right against discrimination and freedom to associate freely.” He also added that “Membership cannot be compelled either directly or indirectly. Anybody aggrieved about compulsion of membership can sue at any time.” Mr Supo further reiterated that “Nothing is sacrosanct about the NBA. It is like any other membership based NGO only that its members are restricted to lawyers only.” He said “the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADL) is also registered under part C and it’s membership is restricted to lawyers only, no association lasts forever,” he said. “The population of lawyers in Nigeria is too high to be forced into a central association far from its members whose welfare it is supposed to take care of.
