On Wednesday, Nigerians were once again left without electricity as the national power grid suffered another collapse, marking the 12th such incident this year.

The grid failure occurred at approximately 2:09 pm, according to a tweet from the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid, which stated, “The major grid setback has occurred and the restoration is to commence.”

This latest collapse comes just weeks after the grid experienced three breakdowns within a single week in October, sparking outrage and frustration among Nigerians who have had to endure frequent power outages throughout the year. Since January 2024, the grid has now collapsed a total of 12 times, with 11 of those incidents occurring between January and November.

The repeated failures of the national power grid have had a severe impact on both households and businesses across the country, as many have been forced to rely on expensive generators to meet their electricity needs. The situation has also led to widespread criticism of the government and calls for urgent action to address the underlying issues plaguing Nigeria’s power sector.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no official statement from the government or the relevant authorities regarding the cause of the latest grid collapse or the timeline for restoring power supply to affected areas. Nigerians, however, remain skeptical about the promises of improved electricity supply, given the recurring nature of these grid failures and the apparent lack of progress in addressing the root problems.
