Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday recounted his experience of betrayal during his 2015 re-election campaign, noting that many Nigerian politicians are not dependable.
Jonathan spoke in Benin, the Edo State capital, at the 70th birthday celebration of Chief Mike Aiyegbeni Oghiadomhe, his former Chief of Staff.
Reflecting on his political journey, Jonathan said Oghiadomhe stood out as one of the few loyal allies who never wavered.
“Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals. I witnessed a lot of betrayal during the 2015 election,” Jonathan said.
“You’ll find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. They will tell you something this minute, and within an hour, they’ll say something different. But I am pleased to associate with Oghiadomhe. He is one person who will take a bullet on my behalf.”
Jonathan praised Oghiadomhe’s integrity, adding: “For me, he is somebody whose words you can take to the bank. Most politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank.”
Oghiadomhe, who served as Jonathan’s Chief of Staff between 2010 and 2014, was celebrated by family, friends, and associates at the event, which drew prominent dignitaries.
Those in attendance included Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Izia Ize-Iyamu, former Governor Lucky Igbinedion, former Governor Oserheimen Osunbor, former Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, Chief Tom Ikimi, and Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), among others.
