Nigerian singer and actress Descushiel has apologized after forgetting the lyrics while singing the national anthem at a police retreat in Imo State.

The entertainer, real name Chiamaka Esther Egbujie, was clad in a police uniform as she led the anthem rendition during the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers held in Owerri.

Top brass including acting IGP Olukayode Egbetokun and Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma were present at the televised event on Monday. However, mid-performance, Descushiel apparently went blank on the lyrics and began mumbling before abruptly stopping.

Video showed the awkward moment as the musical accompaniment continued while the flustered singer seemed unsure what to do next. She then walked back to her seat amid murmurs after failing to continue the anthem.

The gaffe sparked outrage online with many lambasting her for the error at such an important occasion. In response, Descushiel acknowledged the mistake and apologized.

She explained that though she regularly sings the anthem flawlessly, nerves got the better of her before the distinguished audience. The actress regretted the lapse, reiterating her patriotism and promising to improve.

Reactions were mixed between those empathizing with the slip-up and critics who felt she should have prepared diligently for the responsibility. Some also questioned assigning the anthem to entertainers rather than trained professionals.

However, many felt the harsh criticism was unwarranted given Descushiel’s sincere and prompt apology. The incident highlights the immense pressure performers face during high-profile events, causing even seasoned artists to falter unexpectedly.
