A 39-year-old Nigerian national, Frank Nandi, has accused Indian police officers of planting drugs on him following his arrest in the Malad area of Mumbai on Saturday.

According to Times of India, Nandi was apprehended by operatives of the Worli unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell, who reportedly acted on a tip-off and laid an ambush near PJ Colony on Orlem Marve Road. Upon intercepting Nandi, officers searched his bag and claimed to have found 200 grams of white powder, which a preliminary test allegedly confirmed to be cocaine.

The seized substance was valued at Rs 2 crore, approximately N360 million. A Honda City vehicle was also said to have been confiscated during the operation.

Nandi was arraigned before a Holiday Court on Sunday, where police sought to remand him for further investigation. However, in a dramatic twist, Nandi told the court he was framed.

“The police simply arrested me, planted the bag on me, took photos and videos, and later said the seizure was drugs. I completely deny this,” he said in open court when asked by the magistrate if he had any complaints.

The court advised Nandi to engage legal representation, but he requested to speak with his wife before appointing a lawyer. The magistrate directed the police to allow him to make the phone call. Nandi remains in custody as investigations continue.

His case adds to a growing list of Nigerians currently facing drug-related trials in India, including Ifeoluwa Akinwunmi and Chikuwuma, raising concerns about due process and the treatment of foreign nationals within the Indian justice system.
