The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its decision to dismiss former Police Inspector Edith Uduma for her role in the alleged rape of a 17-year-old female suspect by Police Sergeant Abraham Uzuobo.
The incident occurred on October 7th, 2024, at a police station in Edo State, where Uduma was the Charge Room Officer (CRO) on duty.
According to the investigation conducted by the Edo State Police Command, Sergeant Uzuobo removed the victim from her cell and took her to an unoccupied office, where he attempted to engage in sexual acts with her. Inspector Uduma walked in on the incident and recorded it on video. However, instead of immediately reporting the matter to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for disciplinary action, Uduma conspired with her husband, also a Police Inspector, to extort the sum of 1 million naira from Sergeant Uzuobo in exchange for concealing the incident.
When Sergeant Uzuobo refused to comply with their demands, Uduma and her husband decided to report him to the DPO and simultaneously shared the video on social media, a week after the incident occurred.
As a result of the investigation, Sergeant Uzuobo has been dismissed, prosecuted, and is currently in prison custody as the trial progresses. Inspector Uduma was also dismissed for her role in the incident, while her husband has been demoted to the rank of Sergeant.
In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said, “The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., stands firmly against any form of misconduct, particularly in cases of such grave nature involving vulnerable victims. The Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, blackmail, and any behavior that seeks to pervert the cause of justice.”
The Nigeria Police Force has emphasized that the dismissal of former Inspector Uduma was justified based on irrefutable evidence of her failure to follow standard incident reporting protocol, attempt to conceal an offender for personal gain, participation in extortion, and manipulation of the justice process. Her actions were in direct violation of the values and standards upheld by the Nigeria Police Force and the laws of Nigeria.
