Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been released from police custody after spending two days in detention.

Sowore, who was arrested earlier in the week under circumstances yet to be fully disclosed by the authorities, confirmed his release on Friday evening via his social media handle. He expressed appreciation to his supporters and prominent figures who demanded his immediate release.

“The Nigeria Police Force and its illegal IGP have capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, unwarranted and unlawful detention,” Sowore wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “However, it is nothing to celebrate. But I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity. #RevolutionNow.”

A staunch critic of government policies and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Sowore has faced repeated arrests and harassment over his activism. This latest arrest drew swift condemnation from civil society organizations and prominent Nigerians across political divides.

In another post, Sowore thanked human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, activist Deji Adeyanju, and other stakeholders for their public calls demanding his release.

“This is not about me,” he added. “It’s about the future of a country where citizens should not be punished for exercising their rights.”

No official statement has yet been issued by the Nigeria Police Force regarding the reasons for Sowore’s arrest or the conditions surrounding his release.

His release came just hours after his supporters staged protests in at least five states, demanding his freedom.
