Tensions erupted in Lekki, Lagos on Thursday night as police fired teargas at crowds gathered for a candlelight vigil honoring late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad.

The procession organized by fans and friends to pay tribute to Mohbad turned chaotic as officers attempted to disperse sympathizers.

The event, which kicked off at Lekki Phase 1 Gate and was to culminate in a memorial concert at Muri Okunola Park, attracted throngs of supporters as well as music stars like Davido and Falz. But the atmosphere grew volatile when security forces intervened to break up the procession.

Videos on social media showed officers shooting canisters as panic ensued among the participants. Mohbad passed away last Tuesday under mysterious circumstances, provoking activists to demand justice and a thorough probe into his death.

Earlier suspicions focused on possible negligence by his label Marlian Records, leading to protests at its headquarters. The Lagos State Governor has directed multiple agencies to investigate the cause of Mohbad’s death.

Analysts say the police likely feared the procession could evolve into an anti-government protest. But critics argue the aggressive dispersal of unarmed citizens mourning Mohbad was an overreach. The incident has raised more questions about circumstances leading to the young musician’s tragic demise.

Whatever the motives, the disruption of Mohbad’s vigil by teargas has shocked Nigerians and sparked allegations of insensitivity toward his grieving supporters. Going forward, deft handling of investigations and communication with the public will be vital in preventing tensions from escalating.

Nigerian music stars, Davido and Falz have joined the candlelight procession in honour of the late rapper Mohbad currently ongoing in Lekki, Lagos.
