The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has defended the legality of its tinted-glass permit policy, countering reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has filed a suit against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, over the matter.

In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, described claims that the permit system was unlawful and unconstitutional as “untrue and misleading.”

Citing Section 2(3a) of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, the Police explained that the law empowers the IGP or any delegated officer to grant or approve tinted-glass permits. Section 1(2) of the same Act, it added, requires applicants to provide valid reasons such as health or security before approval can be issued.

“The essence of this regulation is consistent with the core mandate of the Police to prevent crimes, as the permit is a critical tool for curbing violent crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and one chance operations,” the statement read.

The NPF further clarified that charges associated with the permits are “purely processing fees” to sustain the digital infrastructure supporting the service. According to Hundeyin, this arrangement is backed by Sections 26(e) and (f) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, which empowers the Police to provide specialised services to the public at a fee.

The statement also highlighted the successes of the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR), noting that it has aided in the tracing and recovery of numerous stolen vehicles nationwide, demonstrating the benefits of technology-driven policing.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, IGP Egbetokun assured Nigerians of professionalism, transparency, and adherence to due process.

“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates the unflinching commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the fundamental rights of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
