A senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afam Osigwe, has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a Lagos-based lawyer, Olumide Sonupe, by officers of the Moshalashi Police Station in Lagos State.

In a statement on Sunday, Osigwe described the circumstances leading to the detention and reported physical abuse of the lawyer as “deeply troubling” and a threat to the rule of law.

According to accounts, Sonupe had gone to the station to seek bail for his client when he was verbally threatened and physically assaulted by the officers. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and Area Commander were also accused of attempting to cover up the misconduct.

“Lawyers should be able to perform their duties without fear of intimidation or harassment,” Osigwe said.

The senior advocate called on the Police authorities and other relevant security agencies to promptly investigate the matter and hold the culpable officers accountable.

Osigwe said the legal profession is pivotal to justice administration and lawyers must not be hampered by acts of police brutality.

The statement has sparked outrage on social media with many condemning police attacks on lawyers and calling for reforms. The Lagos Police Command is yet to comment on the allegations.
