The Bayelsa state police command says it detained one of its officers for shooting a commercial bus driver and two passengers in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Speaking on the development on Tuesday, Asinim Butswat, the command spokesperson, said the incident happened on Monday at the Ekeki area of Yenagoa.

The officer was said to have shot the driver who works with a transport company after an argument over parking space ensued between them.

“The command has arrested and taken into custody, one police mobile force personnel on suspicion of discreditable conduct and unlawful use of his firearm,” Butswat said.

“The policeman involved is currently in detention at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Yenagoa.

“The victims have been evacuated and rushed to the hospital and they are currently responding to treatment.”

Mercy Edet, a witness, said the officer opened fire on the driver over a parking space outside a bank.

“The policeman opened fire when the driver parked beside the bank to discharge a passenger. After it, the killer cop boarded a commercial tricycle and escaped the scene to avoid the mob,” she said.

“The trouble started when the policeman got angry because the driver stopped the bus in front of the bank he was guarding.”
