Police operatives from the Nasarawa Command have arrested another escapee of the Kuje Correctional Center, Mr. Haruna Sunday.

The 35 year-old escapee was nabbed by men and officers of the command in Masaka, Karu local government area of the state.

According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, the suspect was arrested for burglary on June 8, 2023.

“Upon the interrogation, the suspect confessed to have escaped from Kuje prison when it was attacked in 2022,” he explained.

His arrest makes him the third re-arrested escapee from the Correctional Center following its attack by terrorists in 2022.

Recall that in April, 2023, an escapee, Salisu Buhari was rearrested by the operatives of the command in Nassarawa local government area of the state through a sting operation.

Also, few days after the attack on facility, another escapee, Hassan Hassan, a suspected Boko Haram member, was rearrested in Keffi local government area of the state by operatives of the command.

In an interview with journalists at the command headquarters on Wednesday in Lafia, Haruna Sunday said although he was among the escapees, he is however not a terrorist.

He said he was on awaiting trial when the facility was broken into by the terrorists who freed him and others.
“I was awaiting trial when one night I had a gun shot and before I knew it some people believed to be terrorists broke into the prison, forcing all prions inmates out of the prison and this how I escaped from Kuje prison,” he explained.

DSP Nansel said the Kuje escapee would be handed over to Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.
