Pandemonium erupted on Tuesday as officers of the Nigeria Police Force and Amotekun corps engaged in a violent clash during an ongoing football competition organized by the Ogun State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Abeokuta.

According to eyewitnesses, the brawl started after the referee issued red cards to players from both the police and Amotekun teams following misconduct on the pitch. An aggrieved Amotekun player attacked a police player, punching and injuring him.

This led to a pitch invasion by spectators who came to rescue the assaulted officer. Things escalated when an Amotekun player brought out a charm and broken bottle, using it to inflict deep facial cuts on Inspector Ogunremi Oluwafemi.

Reacting, SWAN Chairman Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji condemned the retaliation by the Amotekun operatives during the quarter-final match. He said the competition was meant to promote harmony amongst security agencies.

Ogunsiji noted that trained officers should be able to restrain themselves from aggression. He vowed action will be taken against erring agencies disrupting the tournament.

When contacted, the Amotekun Public Relations Officer Abayomi Osonaike said he could not comment as he was not present at the venue. The police are yet to issue a statement regarding the violent incident.

Analysts have highlighted the need for better discipline and conflict resolution training for security operatives to avoid such inter-agency clashes. The police and Amotekun have been urged to investigate the matter thoroughly and punish offenders.
