Prominent legal luminary, ’Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, has congratulated the President-Elect of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, while urging her to make the unity of the Bar an immediate priority as she prepares to assume leadership of Africa’s largest association of lawyers.

Badejo-Okusanya, fondly called “Mrs. B” by many of her colleagues, was elected President of the NBA following the just-concluded 2026 National Officers’ Election.

In a congratulatory statement, Pinheiro praised the President-Elect for what he described as her proven excellence, inclusiveness and boldness.

He noted that her election marked a major institutional milestone for the Association, describing her as the first female NBA President to be directly elected by members of the Bar.

Pinheiro recalled that although Dame Priscilla Kuye had served as NBA President in 1991, she assumed office after stepping up from the vice presidency following a resignation.

According to him, Badejo-Okusanya’s victory is significant because it represents the first time the general electorate of the NBA voted a woman into the Association’s highest office.

However, Pinheiro said the new NBA leadership must immediately confront the divisions within the Association.

“The Bar is currently polarised along several lines; generational, ideological, and sometimes personal,” he said.

He urged Badejo-Okusanya to place reconciliation and inclusion at the centre of her administration.

“Healing these divisions and building a truly cohesive, inclusive, and purpose-driven Bar must be at the heart of your agenda,” Pinheiro stated.

The senior lawyer emphasised that unity within the NBA is not merely an internal organisational concern but a national necessity.

According to him, a divided Bar cannot effectively discharge its public responsibility or speak with the moral force required to defend justice, good governance and the rule of law.

Pinheiro said a united NBA is vital for protecting the rule of law, advancing the welfare of lawyers and strengthening the Association’s voice in national affairs.

He added that the Bar must remain strong, cohesive and purposeful if it is to continue playing its role as a defender of justice and democratic accountability in Nigeria.

While pledging support for the incoming administration, Pinheiro assured Badejo-Okusanya of his readiness to assist in the effort to build what he described as a bolder, more united and more effective Nigerian Bar Association.
