Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has launched a fresh attack on Peter Obi, describing the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate as “clueless,” “overhyped” and “overrated” ahead of the 2027 election.

Onanuga made the remarks in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday, arguing that Obi’s eight-year record as governor of Anambra State did not support the confidence placed in him by his supporters.

“Peter Obi is simply overhyped and overrated. The guy is clueless. As Anambra governor, he was a spectacular failure,” Onanuga wrote.

He also questioned the expectations of Obi’s supporters as the former Anambra governor prepares for another presidential contest.

“Now gunning for a higher office, his supporters think he can perform a miracle. How? Governance is not by magic,” he said.

Onanuga further argued that anyone seeking to lead Nigeria must have what he described as a strong governance pedigree, accusing Obi of changing positions depending on public sentiment.

“A wannabe national leader must have a governance pedigree, which Peter lacks. He changes his positions like a chameleon, and his worldview is dictated by his mob on social media,” he added.

The remarks come as Obi prepares to challenge President Tinubu again in the 2027 presidential election, this time on the platform of the NDC.

Onanuga’s criticism, however, comes against the backdrop of Obi’s performance in the 2023 presidential election, particularly in Lagos State, widely regarded as Tinubu’s strongest political base.

Official 2023 results showed that Obi, then the Labour Party presidential candidate, defeated Tinubu in Lagos by 9,848 votes. Obi polled 582,454 votes, while Tinubu received 572,606. Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party came third with 75,750 votes.

Obi’s victory in Lagos was one of the most notable results of the 2023 election because Tinubu had governed the state from 1999 to 2007 and had remained a dominant political figure there for years.

The result also showed that Obi won in several major urban local government areas, including Ikeja, Eti-Osa, Alimosho, Oshodi-Isolo and Amuwo-Odofin.

Despite losing Lagos to Obi, Tinubu went on to win the 2023 presidential election nationally and was subsequently declared President by INEC.
