President Bola Tinubu has directed security and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and swift investigation into the tragic death of Arise News anchor, Ms Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, ensuring that those responsible are promptly apprehended and brought to justice.

The President expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Ms Maduagwu, who lost her life during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the incident as “cruel and condemnable” and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the management and staff of Arise News Television, and the wider Nigerian media community.

“Ms Maduagwu was a promising professional journalist whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner. Security and law enforcement agencies should conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice without delay,” the statement read.

While commiserating with the family, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the safety and security of all Nigerians and pledged to continue strengthening measures aimed at combating crime in all its forms.

In a related statement, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu described the death of Maduagwu as “painful and unfortunate.” She said, “I woke up to the sad news of the unfortunate and untimely death of one of our young and brilliant minds in the journalism profession, Somtochukwu Maduagwu. Her death is painful and quite unfortunate. She has been cut down in her prime.”

The First Lady extended her condolences to Chief Nduka Obaigbena, chairman of Arise News, as well as to the journalist’s family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. She prayed that the perpetrators would be apprehended swiftly and brought to justice. “May her soul rest in peace, and may God give her family and all her dear ones the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” she added.
