Groups of aggrieved supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took to the streets in Lafia on Friday to protest the Supreme Court verdict affirming Governor Abdullahi Sule’s election victory.

The PDP loyalists barricaded the busy Lafia-Jos Highway by burning tires in front of the party’s state secretariat, forcing motorists to use alternative routes across the Lafia metropolis.

Shops, business centers and schools abruptly shut down as thick smoke from the tire fire billowed through the state capital. Security forces have moved in to calm tensions and prevent escalation.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the appeal filed by PDP challenging Governor Sule’s election win. The verdict sparked immediate demonstrations by opposition party faithfuls who believe the judgement was unfair.

“We will not accept this daylight robbery by the judges. Sule’s election was full of irregularities but they have chosen to turn a blind eye,” said Musa Galadima, a protesting member of the PDP.
