The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, has emphasized the need for regular intellectual development within the judiciary to effectively navigate the complexities posed by social media.

Speaking at the 2024 Annual Conference of Justices of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, she highlighted the range of challenges that the emergence of social media has generated for the judiciary.

Justice Dongban-Mensem noted that social media has given rise to issues such as the management of online reputation, cyber-bullying, and harassment. She also pointed out the growing concern surrounding the preservation of the integrity of digital evidence in legal proceedings.

“To effectively navigate these complexities, it is only appropriate for the judiciary to engage in a process of regular intellectual upliftment,” Justice Dongban-Mensem stated. She stressed the importance of regularly examining existing practices, procedures, and policies to ensure their efficacy, efficiency, and fairness in the digital age.

The Court of Appeal President further touched upon the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the judiciary. While acknowledging the potential of AI to revolutionize the administration of justice by enhancing efficiency, improving decision-making, and expanding access to justice, she also raised profound questions regarding bias, transparency, and accountability in the deployment of AI in judicial contexts.

Justice Dongban-Mensem’s call for intellectual growth and adaptability within the judiciary comes at a time when the institution is grappling with the rapid evolution of technology and its impact on legal proceedings. As social media continues to shape public discourse and influence societal norms, the judiciary must remain vigilant and equipped to address the challenges it presents.

The 2024 Annual Conference of Justices of the Court of Appeal, with its theme of “Judicial Introspection,” provides a platform for judicial officers to engage in collective reflection, share experiences, and strategize on ways to improve justice delivery in the face of emerging challenges.
