*Call For A Welfare Review For Judicial Officers’ Well-Being

Past Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 1st Vice President, Stanley Chidozie Imo Esq, has paid tribute to the late Justice of the Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Chima Centus Nweze, hailing him as a man of uncompromising repute and uncommon devotion.

In a heartfelt tribute message, Imo Esq expressed his shock and disbelief at the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Nweze. He said, “I received with a rude shock the news of the death of the highly revered and renowned jurist of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice Chima Centus Nweze. In fact, I am yet to come to terms with the reality of the news.”

Describing the qualities of the late Justice, Imo Esq lauded his Lordship’s exemplary performance of judicial duties. “The late jurist was an astute judge of uncompromising repute and uncommon devotion. He was dedicated to his calling, and his duties were performed without blemish,” he noted.

Furthermore, he emphasized, “The contributions of my lord to Nigerian jurisprudence are of no small measure. His pronouncements and judgments, as can be found on the pages of our Law Reports, are judgments that were truly well-considered.”

Imo Esq expressed his wish that upon retirement, the vast and rich experience of the late Justice would have been a great resource for the country. Unfortunately, this was not the case, as six years before retirement, His Lordship took a bow in a manner that reminds us of the poor welfare of our judicial officers, particularly Justices of the Supreme Court.

“The past few days have witnessed the loss of Justices and Judges, including my Lord, Hon. Justice R. C. Agbo, JCA, my Lord, Hon. Justice Peter Mallong of the Federal High Court, and my Lord, the immediate-past Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiri (retd.),” he added.

He went on to echo the call made by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Y. C. Maikyau, SAN, OON, for an urgent review of the welfare and working conditions of Judicial Officers. Imo Esq stated, “I will use this medium to lend a voice to the call by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Y. C. Maikyau, SAN, OON, calling for an urgent review of the welfare and working conditions of our Judicial Officers. Indeed, the loss of Judges and Justices in circumstances that smack of neglect for their health and well-being is completely unacceptable.”

In conclusion, Imo Esq prayed for the Almighty God to comfort the families of the late Justices and grant their souls eternal rest. Amen!
