The Minister of State for Niger Delta, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has blamed government interference for the failure of the fight against corruption in the past.

However, he said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission deserved commendation for recording the highest number of convictions among the law enforcement agencies in the country.

Keyamo said this at the EFCC Academy, Abuja, on Thursday, while addressing 164 officers of the EFCC Cadet Course 8 undergoing orientation and induction at the academy.

The minister charged the cadets to take the fight against corruption seriously, bearing in mind the admonition of President Muhammadu Buhari that, “if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.”

“Anybody who said corruption is not the bane of Nigeria today is not honest. A research conducted sometime ago revealed that the amount of money looted as a result of corruption in Nigeria stands at $400bn,” Keyamo was quoted to have said in a statement by the spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren.

According to the statement, Keyamo enjoined the cadets to celebrate their recruitment into the commission “at a time when the EFCC truly enjoys complete independence to execute its mandate.”

In his presentation, the Head, EFCC Human Resources, Femi Gbarufu, enlightened the cadets on the structure and functions of the unit.

Meanwhile, EFCC operatives in Abuja and Ilorin Zonal Offices, have arrested 13 suspected Internet fraudsters in separate operations.

Those arrested are Chiyiri Izuchi, Nurala Eze Kamchi, Amuka Shadrack, Nwegbediegwu Chekwubechukw, Chigbo Eze, Franklin Okafor, Ezeagwu Olisaemeka and Nnamani Chukwudera.

The items recovered from them include several mobile phones, laptop computers, several passports, a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota Avalon, Lexus IS 250, Mercedes 4matic C350, Mercedes C280, Mercedes GLA 280 and a Honda Acura car.
