An explosion rocked parts of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital on Tuesday evening, leaving some residents dead and destroying properties.

The state government says the situation is now under control after the governor, Seyi Makinde, deployed all security chiefs and fire service operatives to the scene.

The explosion, which occurred around 8 pm along Dejo Oyelese Street in Bodija, has left many residents injured. Several buildings also collapsed due to the impact.

In a statement, the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed that an “uncommon explosion” occurred in Ibadan but said the state government has taken over the situation.

“All security service chiefs including para-military chiefs and Fire Operatives have been deployed by the governor to rein in the spillover from the explosion,” the statement read.

While the cause of the explosion is yet unknown, Oyelade appealed to citizens to remain calm, promising their safety is guaranteed.

Reacting to the incident, Adewale Osifeso, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, said the explosion was traced to Dejo Oyelese Street in the Bodija area of the metropolis.

The police command also said while details are still sketchy, they have made deployments to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order due to the incident.
