Panic gripped Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday morning as armed men stormed the town, firing sporadically and leaving several people injured.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, dressed in mafia-style outfits, arrived in Sienna vehicles and caused widespread chaos. Several vehicles were reportedly set ablaze, while unconfirmed reports indicated that some residents may have been killed.

Many locals abandoned their homes, fleeing to safer locations as fear spread rapidly through the community. Initial reports indicated that security personnel were not present during the early stages of the attack.

One resident, speaking anonymously, expressed frustration over what he described as the failure of government-backed security operations such as Agunechemba and Operation Udo Ga Achi to prevent such incidents. He blamed the violence on Biafra agitators and criticised the police for failing to anticipate or stop the attack.

“I advise our people to remain indoors. These attackers are more powerful than all the security outfits combined. Governor Soludo needs to find a lasting solution,” he said.

The resident also suggested that the violence may have been linked to recent comments reportedly made by Governor Chukwuma Soludo during a visit to the United States, where he allegedly attributed killings and kidnappings in the southeast to individuals of Igbo origin.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command said two civilians were killed in the attack, while one of the assailants was neutralised.

According to Police spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, four vehicles were also recovered, and security has since been restored in the area.

“Our Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, is a field man. He will not allow hoodlums to overrun Anambra State. Our men have taken control of the area,” Ikenga said.
