A United Nigeria Airlines flight skidded off the runway while landing at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on Friday evening.

Airline spokesperson Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu confirmed the incident involved flight U5 0513 from Owerri with 51 passengers and 4 crew members on board. He stated the plane landed safely but slid off the runway amid torrential rains.

According to Uchegbu, all passengers and crew were promptly evacuated without casualties. He noted relevant authorities were informed about the incident.

The airline assured that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it will not compromise on this. Uchegbu reiterated United Nigeria’s commitment to always ensuring passengers reach destinations safely.

Video footage showed the Embraer 145 regional jet tilted to one side off the runway. The airport was temporarily shut down following the incident.

Aviation authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Initial reports indicate the heavy rainfall may have caused accumulations of water on the runway surface resulting in the plane hydroplaning.

While disrupting airport operations, the prompt evacuation prevented injury or loss of life. United Nigeria will be assessing aircraft damage and regaining normal schedules after its flight met with trouble on the flooded Lagos runway.
