The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on Monday held talks with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, as both institutions moved to deepen coordination between the country’s fiscal and monetary authorities.

The meeting, held at the Federal Ministry of Finance on Monday, July 27, 2026, was described by officials as brief but substantive, with discussions focusing primarily on liquidity management and improving the effectiveness of fiscal policy.

Both issues have remained central to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy, moderate inflationary pressures, strengthen the foreign exchange market and create a more predictable business environment.

Speaking after the meeting, Oyedele said stronger alignment between monetary and fiscal policies was crucial to sustaining the economic gains recorded so far and accelerating Nigeria’s progress towards shared prosperity.

The engagement comes amid continuing debate over the level of coordination between the Federal Ministry of Finance and the CBN, particularly in areas where government spending, revenue management and monetary policy decisions directly affect liquidity, inflation, interest rates and exchange-rate stability.

Previous administrations at the Finance Ministry have also emphasised the need for closer cooperation with the apex bank to prevent policies adopted by one institution from weakening or undermining the objectives of the other.

Since assuming office in April 2026, Oyedele has continued to prioritise macroeconomic stability, revenue mobilisation, fiscal reforms and the effective implementation of the Federal Government’s economic policies.

Monday’s meeting indicates that the Finance Ministry and the CBN intend to maintain closer engagement and present a coordinated approach to managing the economy.

The discussions also signal continuity in the government’s reform programme, with fiscal and monetary authorities expected to work together on managing liquidity, reducing inflationary pressures, strengthening investor confidence and ensuring that economic stability translates into improved living conditions for Nigerians.
