Popular social media activist and critic, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), on Monday staged a symbolic protest at the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in Abuja.

The protest, held at the entrance of Wike’s home, featured school-aged children dressed in uniforms as VDM conducted a mock classroom session, teaching them the alphabet. In a viral clip from the protest, VDM led the children in reciting: “S for Suegbe, T for Tinubu, W for Wike,” declaring the minister’s gate their new classroom.

The protest comes amid public outcry over Wike’s recent decision to withhold 10 percent of the statutory allocation to the six FCT Area Councils due to their alleged failure to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage for primary school teachers. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has been on strike since March 24, leaving thousands of children out of school for over nine weeks.

VDM had earlier taken to Facebook to demand the intervention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging that Area Council chairmen falsified records to reflect payment of ₦80,000 salaries to teachers while continuing to pay just ₦30,000 in reality.

“For over 9 weeks, our public primary school kids in the Federal Capital Territory have been out of school,” he wrote. “This is not the future you promised Nigerians. Our children will be limited to a brighter future without basic education. EFCC must investigate the salary board and clean up this mess.”
