The Federal Government has assured public servants that the outstanding wage award will be paid before the middle of August, while pending promotion arrears are being processed for payment.

The assurance followed a meeting between the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, and the leadership of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Trade Side, led by its National President, Kabiru Ado Minjibir.
A statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie, said the government had already begun addressing several issues raised by the Council even before receiving its formal communication.
Oyedele reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to resolving legitimate labour concerns through constructive engagement, realistic timelines and prompt implementation of agreements reached with workers.
“When government makes commitments, it delivers. We are not in the habit of making promises that cannot be fulfilled. Where there are outstanding issues, we will give realistic timelines and ensure they are implemented,” the minister said.
He disclosed that the necessary approvals and release for the payment of the outstanding wage award were being finalised, expressing confidence that eligible public servants would begin receiving the money before the middle of August.
Oyedele also assured the delegation that outstanding promotion arrears were receiving the required attention, with pending batches being processed in accordance with established procedures.
The minister directed relevant officials to immediately review the documents submitted by the Council, engage the appropriate Ministries, Departments and Agencies and accelerate action on matters requiring government intervention.
He acknowledged organised labour’s concerns over delays in the implementation of some agreements but maintained that the government would continue to strengthen trust through transparency, regular consultation and prompt action.
“Our objective is to build a system where issues are resolved proactively. We want workers to have confidence that once government gives its word, it will honour that commitment,” he said.
Earlier, Minjibir commended the minister for receiving the delegation and appealed for the speedy resolution of pending labour issues, including the outstanding wage award, promotion arrears and salary relativity concerns affecting health workers.
He said the timely implementation of the government’s commitments would strengthen industrial harmony and improve workers’ confidence in the administration’s willingness to address their welfare.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Raymond Omachi, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working closely with organised labour to ensure that approved workers’ entitlements were processed and released without avoidable delays.
The Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Mohammed Danjuma, disclosed that Batch 7 promotion arrears, which were inadvertently omitted during an earlier payment exercise, were being processed alongside Batch 9.
Danjuma said the government was also engaging relevant MDAs to resolve issues relating to the Peculiar Allowance and other outstanding labour matters.
Providing an update on the wage award, the Director of the Cash Management Department, Christiana Osho, said reconciliation had been completed and the release of funds had reached its final stage.
She explained that eligible public servants would begin receiving the outstanding wage award once the release was effected, while processing of the promotion arrears would continue according to the approved schedule.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to sustained dialogue and collaboration aimed at resolving outstanding labour issues and maintaining industrial harmony across the Federal Public Service.
