E. E. Isong, Esq., a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Idemili Branch and Secretary of the Young Lawyers Forum of the branch, was allegedly assaulted and humiliated by a police officer while carrying out his lawful duties at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Awka, Anambra State on Friday, July 5, 2024.

The incident has sparked outrage within the legal community, with many condemning the actions of the police officer involved. The identity of the officer is yet to be determined, but the NBA Idemili Branch has called for an emergency general meeting on Monday, July 8, 2024, to discuss the matter and determine the next course of action.

According to sources within the branch, Isong was at the SCIID in connection with a case he was handling when the alleged assault took place. The details of the incident remain unclear, but it has been reported that the police officer in question subjected Isong to physical assault and verbal humiliation, leaving him in a state of distress.

The NBA Idemili Branch has expressed its full support for Isong and has vowed to take all necessary steps to ensure that justice is served. The branch is expected to release a statement following its emergency meeting, outlining the actions it plans to take to address the situation and protect the rights and dignity of its members.

The incident has once again brought to light the issue of police brutality and the need for increased accountability and professionalism within the Nigerian Police Force. Many have called for a thorough investigation into the matter and for the officer responsible to face disciplinary action.
