*Critics Question Egbe’s Strategy As NBA Voters Span All Regions; Say Regional Endorsements Have Limited Impact

The Yoruba lawyers’ group, Egbe Amofin O’odua, has officially endorsed Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, as its consensus candidate for the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election. This decision was announced at the group’s 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on August 7 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, under the chairmanship of Aare Isiaka Olagunju, SAN.

During the AGM, delegates deliberated on key issues affecting the legal profession and the unity of the association ahead of the NBA elections. A special committee chaired by Vice Chairperson Mrs. Toyin Bashorun, SAN, evaluated all aspirants from the South-West who had declared interest in the NBA presidency. Using criteria such as professional experience, national appeal, composure, vision, and loyalty to Egbe ideals, Akinboro emerged as the highest-ranked aspirant.

The AGM also reaffirmed a 2019 resolution to give preference to candidates from the Oyo/Osun axis for the 2026 NBA presidency, with particular emphasis on Osun State, which has never produced an NBA president. Consequently, the group appealed to other aspirants from the region, including Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, Prof. Foluke Dada-Lawanson, and Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, FCIArb (Mrs B), to step down in the spirit of unity.

At the time of filing this report, neither Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe nor Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya had responded to the endorsement or the call to withdraw.

The endorsement has sparked mixed reactions among critics. Some argue that such endorsements have limited impact because NBA voters are not restricted to members from any one region. They point out that past presidential elections saw candidates from the South-West lose due to vote splitting among multiple aspirants from the region, weakening their chances. Others believe the upcoming 2026 election will be decided more on candidates’ capacity and effectiveness in advancing the interests of young lawyers rather than regional or tribal considerations.

Other resolutions at the AGM included encouraging greater participation of judicial officers in Egbe activities, fixing the first week of August as the annual conference period, and confirming that the 2026 conference will be held in Osogbo, Osun State.

As the 2026 NBA presidential race heats up, all eyes will be on how unity within the Yoruba legal community influences the wider electoral outcome and whether the calls for a unified front translate into electoral success.
