Leading commercial law firm, Aelex, has announced that the upcoming 19th edition of its flagship annual lecture will focus on fostering dialogue on how the rule of law can drive Nigeria’s economic development.
At a press briefing held at Union Marble House, Ikoyi, Lagos, the firm revealed that the lecture will hold on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, with the theme: “Rule of Law and Economic Development: The Nigerian Experience.”
This year’s keynote address will be delivered by the former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN, GCON, while a high-level panel session will follow. Discussants include Director General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Chinyere Almona; Chairman, Bi-Courtney Group, Dr. Wale Babalakin, SAN; Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company, Mr. Bismarck Rewane; and journalist and public affairs analyst, Dr. Reuben Abati.
Speaking at the event, Managing Partner of Aelex, Adedapo Tunde-Olowu SAN, said the lecture has, over the past two decades, become one of the country’s most respected intellectual gatherings, bringing together stakeholders in law, governance, business, and civil society.
He said: “The rule of law is not merely a legal construct; it is the foundation upon which economic progress, investor confidence, and sustainable prosperity rest.
“At this critical point in Nigeria’s journey, the discussion on how our legal framework can unlock growth and secure opportunity for all could not be more timely.”
Senior Partner at Aelex, Prof. Fubara Anga SAN, explained that the lecture has grown into a platform that not only fosters dialogue but also provides government and business leaders with actionable ideas. He noted that recommendations emerging from the sessions would be compiled and shared with relevant authorities.
“The Aelex lecture provides a non-partisan space for honest engagement on issues of national importance. While participants may not always agree, the credibility of the platform ensures robust, respectful debate,” Anga said.
He added that this year’s discussion will spotlight practical issues such as property rights, the sanctity of contracts, regulatory powers, and dispute resolution, all crucial for attracting investment and driving Nigeria’s economic revival.
Over the years, the Aelex lecture has hosted eminent voices including Justice Mervyn King, Professor Patrick Lumumba, John Githongo, Professor Frederic Jenny, and Dr. Kwabena Donkor.
The firm said it remains committed to using the platform as part of its corporate social responsibility, advancing conversations that shape Nigeria’s legal and economic development.
