Dangote Group Plc has promised full support and compensation for Mrs. Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Ijeoma “Phyna” Otabor, who sustained severe injuries in an accident involving one of the company’s trucks in Auchi, Edo State.

The incident occurred last week along the Auchi axis, just days after Mrs. Otabor’s polytechnic graduation, leaving her hospitalised at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. Eyewitnesses reported that the accident caused heavy traffic before emergency responders and security personnel arrived.

According to reports, one of Mrs. Otabor’s legs has been amputated, while the other remains at risk. The truck driver fled the scene but was later arrested amid claims of negligence and attempts at cover-up.

In a statement released on Thursday, Dangote Group assured that it was taking full responsibility.

“Following the recent road accident in Auchi, Edo State, involving one of our trucks, which sadly resulted in injury to Mrs. Ruth Otabor, senior officials from Dangote Cement Plc, together with our Insurance team, promptly visited the scene, engaged with law enforcement authorities, and visited the victim and her family at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital,” the company said.

“This action reflects our unwavering commitment to the well-being of those affected. We are ensuring full support for Mrs. Otabor, including comprehensive medical care and appropriate compensation, in line with Dangote Group’s welfare policy. Our thoughts remain with Mrs. Ruth Otabor and her loved ones, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery.”

The company added that it was cooperating with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and reiterated its commitment to the safety of road users.

Phyna, however, expressed her dissatisfaction with the statement on social media, questioning how someone with a recently amputated leg and in critical condition could recover “speedily.” She also drew attention to another victim, a motorbike rider, who remains in a critical condition.

The Dangote Group had earlier confirmed that a representative had visited Ruth Otabor, offering compensation and expressing well-wishes for her recovery.
