The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday declared the Ondo South Senatorial District seat vacant following the exit of Jimoh Ibrahim from the Red Chamber.

Akpabio made the announcement during plenary, formally notifying lawmakers of the development and setting in motion the process to fill the vacancy.

According to him, declaring the seat vacant followed the appointment of Ibrahim, who hitherto occupied the seat, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The President of the Senate called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a by-election in the next 30 days to fill the existing vacancy in line with extant laws.

Akpabio directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to transmit the resolution of the Senate to the Independent National Electoral Commission for urgent action.

The development marks a fresh transition in Ondo South’s representation at the National Assembly, with INEC now expected to set the timetable for the bye-election in compliance with constitutional provisions governing legislative vacancies.

In March, President Bola Tinubu appointed the senator as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Ibrahim, a doctoral graduate of the University of Cambridge, obtained his Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Master of Science from the University of Oxford.

He was born in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, in 1967

Until his appointment, Ibrahim was the chairman of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Relations.

He was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2023, representing Ondo South Senatorial District.

While in the Senate, Ibrahim was appointed as Interim President of the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary in Geneva in 2023.

He served as Nigeria’s Representative in ECOWAS and also as an Executive Member of the Pan-African Parliament.

Ibrahim served in the Senate Committees on Appropriations, Finance, Gas, Education, NDDC, Capital Market, Diaspora and NGOs, Trade and Investment, Housing, and Niger Delta.

Among the bills initiated and sponsored by Senator Ibrahim are the Bill on Bitumen, Federal Medical Centre Igbotako, Insurance (Amendment) Act, and Nigeria Data Bank.
