The Ogun State Police Command has concluded plans to arrest and prosecute a female TikTok user, identified as Mirabel, after she allegedly admitted that her earlier claim of rape was false.

Mirabel was said to have made the admission during a viral phone conversation with social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

An audio recording of the conversation, shared online by VDM on Thursday, captured Mirabel admitting that aspects of her initial account were untrue.

“Yes, sir, please help me, I am very sorry,” she was heard saying after being confronted with messages she had earlier claimed were sent by her alleged attacker.

During the exchange, she also acknowledged creating the threatening TikTok account herself to bolster her narrative.

“I have been taking drugs, and I was not thinking clearly when I posted the videos,” she reportedly said.

A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media, told PUNCH Metro that a Divisional Police Officer and other senior officers were at the hospital where Mirabel was receiving treatment.

The source added that she would be taken into custody upon discharge and charged in court.

“The DPO and some senior police officers are currently at the hospital where she is admitted. Once she is discharged, she will be taken into custody, and a charge will be prepared against her for trial. The essence is to serve as a deterrent to others,” the source said.

Mirabel had earlier alleged that she was attacked and raped by a stranger who forcibly gained access to her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State.

The allegation, which she shared on the social media platform TikTok, sparked widespread outrage, with many users calling for swift action against sexual violence and the hashtag #StopRapingWomen trending on X.

In a statement made available on Wednesday, the police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer of the Ibafo Division to immediately reach out to Mirabel after the report surfaced.

“She reported at the Ibafo Police Station, where the facts of the case were obtained. Preliminary findings revealed that the alleged incident occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction.

“She was promptly escorted to a medical facility for assessment and urgent attention. Following preliminary treatment, she was conveyed to the Ogijo Police Station for proper documentation and continuation of investigative procedures,” Babaseyi said.

Babaseyi added that the police are handling the matter professionally and urged the public to verify information through official channels before dissemination.

“She was immediately taken for a comprehensive medical check-up, and her health is being closely monitored, as her well-being remains paramount. At no time was the victim arrested,” the statement read.

Social media activist VeryDarkMan moved from activist to investigator, conducting a phone conversation with Mirabel that led to her confession.

The breakthrough occurred when VeryDarkMan began questioning the consistency of Mirabel’s story. Suspecting that substance use might be clouding her memory, he questioned her about her habits. Mirabel admitted to consuming codeine mixed with Sprite, a combination known to cause severe hallucinations.

“You need to think very well so you don’t put yourself in deeper troubles,” VDM warned her. “Codeine and alcohol can make you hallucinate… there is a possibility you used your own hands to cut yourself.”

After the lengthy private follow-up call, the weight of the truth finally broke through. Mirabel made several startling admissions to VDM:

The assault was fabricated: When asked point-blank if the story of the rape was true, Mirabel replied, “Yes, sir [it is not true].”

Self-harm explanation: She confessed that she suffers from panic attacks and frequently cuts herself as a way to “be fine,” explaining the physical injuries she had previously used as “evidence.”

Fake account: Mirabel admitted to creating a separate social media account herself to spread the false story and gain traction.

VeryDarkMan shared updates on his platforms, alleging that Mirabel later admitted to him that her rape claim was false and that she required rehabilitation.

“Painful Mirabel has confessed that her friend introduced her to drugs, and it affected her brain. She needs rehab right now! She lied about the rape case.

“She says she used to have panic attacks and has pleaded for Nigerians to forgive her. It’s sad that an innocent young man could have gone to prison because of this.

“My tears, my 5k that I sent to her. Jesus Christ. Since VDM said we should forgive her, Nigerians, please let’s forgive,” VDM shared.

VDM posed the ultimate question to his audience regarding the consequences of false accusations:

“Should we get emotional and overlook the unlawful act? Or should the law strike at this point?”

He reminded his followers of the gravity of the situation: “Just imagine for a minute that she pointed an accusing finger to one innocent guy. As in, what would have happened to that guy by now?”

The most chilling aspect of the confession is the existence of the unnamed man Mirabel had accused. While she had not yet publicly named him to the world, the machinery for his social destruction was already in motion.

In the recording, VDM pressed her on other personal details, including her sexuality and habits, painting a picture of a deeply troubled individual. Mirabel confirmed she is a lesbian and struggles with various psychological triggers.

However, her lawyer questioned why VDM would publish what was discussed in private online without the girl’s consent in order to make money and drive traffic to his platform, alleging a breach of privacy.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency stressed the importance of thorough investigations in cases of alleged domestic and sexual violence, warning against misinformation while affirming that victims must not be silenced.

In a statement shared on its official platforms on Thursday, the agency said that although emotions often run high in such cases, “thorough and professional investigation remains the foundation of justice,” noting that “it protects survivors, safeguards the rights of the accused, and ensures that outcomes are based on facts, not speculation.”

The agency had initially appealed to the public to help locate the survivor and later confirmed that the incident occurred in Ogun State, placing it outside its jurisdiction.

It subsequently forwarded all relevant information to authorities in Ogun State in the spirit of inter-agency collaboration.

Reiterating its stance, the Lagos agency maintained that justice requires “truth, evidence, and due process.”

“False claims and misinformation can damage public trust and make it harder for genuine survivors to be believed. At the same time, we must never create an environment that silences victims. Justice requires truth, evidence, and due process. Always.”

The developments have triggered reactions among social media users, with some expressing concern that false allegations could undermine genuine cases of sexual violence, while others called for due process and proper handling of the matter.

This incident has highlighted a dangerous trend of weaponised allegations in the digital age, with commentators noting that an innocent man’s life could have been ruined in the “court of public opinion.”
