* Says Nigerian Politics is anti-people * Says Nigerian Politics is Corruption Infested * No Law In Nigeria Permits Candidate Adoption A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, J.S. Okutepa has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to reject any candidate from any political party that did not emerge through party primaries. The learned silk gave this charge when commenting on the nature of politics in Nigeria. According to him, Nigerian politics is corruption infested as there is no democracy in our party politics. ”I think Nigerian politics is corruption infested. There is no democracy in our party politics. Reports I received from those close to me who decided to engage in the dirty water of politics show how unpopular candidates have been imposed on the parties and our people.” He also spoke about those who are not popular at the grassroots but run to Abuja to have their names forwarded to INEC. He thus urged INEC to be careful as its integrity as an independent body is now at stake. ”The National Secretariat of political parties have become the centre of attractions. INEC itself needs to be careful. ”The statement from INEC that it will only accept names of candidates submitted by the national secretariat of political parties needs to be examined. The constitution empowered INEC to monitor primary elections of political parties. INEC must be bold to reject candidates submitted to it who did not win primary of their parties,” he said. Speaking as an authority, the learned silk stated that there is no law permitting such steps already taken by some political parties as it affects the oncoming election, stressing that candidate adoption or affirmation is not known to our electoral laws. ”There is nothing in the Electoral Act and constitution that allows candidates of political parties to emerge by affirmation or adoption. ”There is no room for candidates to emerge by MOU. Our laws require that all candidates to contest elections in Nigeria must emerge through primary elections. Therefore each candidate must be seen to have subjected himself or herself to these democratic norms,” he added. Also, Mr. Okutepa is asking aspirants who were denied the opportunity of contesting in party primaries after spending a lot of money to ask for a refund. He specifically advised such persons to ask for a refund of their money, whilst concluding that the version of politics in operation in Nigeria is anti-people. ”There are reports of humongous amount of money running into billions of Naira being spent by aspirants and who have been denied the opportunity to participate in the primary elections of these parties. These aspirants must insist on the refund of their money. The way we run and do politics in Nigeria clearly create room for corruption to thrive in geometrical proportion. People who spend humongous amount of money to vie for political offices will definitely recoup their investments upon election. That is why this govt must do something to save Nigerians from this money politics. ”We cannot afford this monetized politics in the mist of the needs for infrastructural development. The other day I heard a prominent politician says politics is much more than infrastructural development. I wonder what that means. I feel that our brand of politics is anti-people and anti-development. This is sad,” he added.]]>
