The Chief Justice of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has urged law undergraduates to keep their eyes fixed on excellence, possess strong character, and prioritise diligence to succeed in the rigorous legal training ahead.

Dipeolu stated that the legal profession is undoubtedly noble and highly rewarding, but the training is demanding. Therefore, any student who wants to carve a niche must be ready to shun all forms of distraction and embrace quality learning and study.

The CJ, represented by Justice Adetokunbo Jibodu of the Ogun State High Court, gave this charge during the annual dinner held on Saturday by the Faculty of Law, Chrisland University, Abeokuta, to welcome newly admitted law students while also offering insight into the task ahead.

She urged the students to take their legal training seriously, describing the profession as one that demands the highest level of responsibility.

The CJ said, “The legal profession is conservative in nature and demands the highest levels of discipline, diligence and integrity.”

“Legal training is not just about passing exams. It is the bedrock that prepares you to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of a society governed by justice, fairness and the rule of law.

“The study of law is intellectually challenging but also rewarding, offering immense opportunities for personal growth. The legal profession is conservative, implying that it values tradition and established practices.”

She encouraged the students to take advantage of every learning opportunity while in school and during their court attachments.

“When the time comes for your court programme, pay attention to proceedings and do not hesitate to ask questions where necessary after the court has risen,” Dipeolu added.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Oyedunni Arulogun, also urged the law students to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in their chosen profession.

Arulogun encouraged the students to remain focused and undeterred in the face of obstacles, stressing that the legal profession requires dedication, hard work, and perseverance.

In his keynote address, renowned legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Sola Ojutalayo, SAN, charged the students to embrace both academic and ethical excellence, describing law as a lifelong calling to serve and make an impact.

“The study of law is more than an academic pursuit. It is a call to serve, to take responsibility, and to make an impact,” he said.

Ojutalayo reminded the students that the heights attained in the profession come through consistency and hard work.

“Success in this noble profession demands sacrifice, diligence and a relentless commitment to excellence — even when no one is watching,” he stressed.

While emphasising the evolving nature of legal practice, Ojutalayo noted that the courtroom is not the only path to relevance.

“Today, we have lawyers in entertainment law, tech, sports, intellectual property, data privacy, arbitration and more. The profession is wide and full of opportunities,” he stated.

The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr Kayode Akinsola, in his welcome address, described the event as a celebration of the institution’s values, achievements and ambitions.

Akinsola also told the students to brace themselves for an exciting legal training in the school, saying that the university has all it takes to bring out the world’s best lawyers from among the students.
