The United Kingdom’s broadcast regulator, Ofcom, has launched an investigation into Channel 4’s dating series, Married at First Sight UK, following a complaint filed under its fairness and privacy rules.

Ofcom confirmed the investigation but did not provide further details on the specific complaint. A spokesperson for the regulator said, “We are investigating a Fairness and Privacy complaint about Married At First Sight UK.”

The probe comes amid mounting scrutiny of the popular Channel 4 programme after serious allegations were made by former contestants. Earlier reports had alleged that two women claimed they were raped by partners they met on the show, while a third alleged that she experienced a non-consensual sexual act.

All the men involved have denied the allegations. One former contestant was also recently arrested on suspicion of rape and is currently on bail.

Ofcom officials had previously told British lawmakers that the allegations raised serious concerns. The regulator’s group director of broadcast, Cristina Nicolotti Squires, described the allegations as “deeply disturbing,” while Ofcom Chief Executive, Dame Melanie Dawes, also said the claims raised “really serious concerns” for the regulator.

The regulator had earlier indicated that it would examine an advance copy of Channel 4’s review into welfare standards on the show and urgently consider whether any regulatory action was necessary.

Channel 4 has already opened two separate welfare investigations into the programme. One is being overseen by a law firm, while the other is being led by former BBC One chief, Lorraine Heggessey. Both reviews have yet to be completed.

Following the allegations, Channel 4 removed all episodes of Married at First Sight UK from its streaming platform.

Channel 4 Chief Executive, Priya Dogra, had in late May apologised to the women who made what she described as “very troubling” rape allegations.

Lawyers for CPL Productions, the producer of Married at First Sight UK, had earlier disputed elements of the claims.

The investigation places further pressure on one of Channel 4’s biggest reality television franchises. Married at First Sight UK has aired for more than a decade and features contestants meeting for the first time at the altar before going on honeymoon and later deciding whether to remain together.

The already filmed 11th series of the show is now on hold, with its future still undecided pending the outcome of the ongoing reviews and regulatory scrutiny.
