The Managing Partner of Obra Legal, Ikechukwu Onuoma, SAN, has, on behalf of the firm’s partners and associates, congratulated its Founding and Principal Partner, Iyom A.J. Offiah, SAN, FCIArb, on her birthday, describing her as a pioneering legal practitioner whose career has been defined by integrity, brilliance and exceptional service to the profession.

In a goodwill message, Onuoma celebrated Chief Mrs Anayo Justina Offiah, née Iloeje, as a revered “legal Amazon” who has spent nearly five decades breaking barriers, mentoring younger lawyers and contributing to the development of Nigeria’s justice system.

“Happy birthday to a revered legal Amazon, Iyom A.J. Offiah, SAN, FCIArb. Today, we reflect on a remarkable legacy built on integrity, unparalleled brilliance and quiet strength,” the message read.

“Thank you for decades of distinguished service and for constantly inspiring generations of lawyers. Wishing you continued grace, peace and profound fulfilment.”

Widely known as the “Dame of the Eastern Bar,” Offiah is recognised as the first female lawyer from Nigeria’s South-East region to be elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Her elevation marked a significant milestone for women in the legal profession and reinforced her reputation as one of the region’s foremost advocates.

Offiah previously served as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Enugu State, where she played a central role in the administration of justice and the development of government legal policy.

Beyond her tenure as Attorney-General, she also served as the Facilitator of the Enugu State Justice Reform Team, contributing to initiatives aimed at creating a more modern, efficient and humane criminal justice system.

She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a professional distinction recognising her expertise in arbitration and commercial dispute resolution.

Offiah began her legal career in 1979 during her National Youth Service Corps programme at the Ondo State Ministry of Justice.

After completing her service year, she relocated to Enugu and established a private legal practice, A.J. Offiah & Co., which later developed into Obra Legal.

Under her leadership, the firm grew into a prominent law practice, while she became a respected advocate, administrator, arbitrator and mentor to generations of lawyers.

Her career has included several important public and professional appointments.

She served as a member of the Anambra State Law Reporting Committee and as Chairman of the Anambra State Local Government Election Tribunal for the Onitsha Zone.

Offiah is also a member of the Body of Benchers, the institution responsible for the formal admission of qualified persons into the Nigerian legal profession and the maintenance of professional standards at the Bar.

Obra Legal said her professional journey reflected courage, discipline and an enduring commitment to justice, describing her as a source of inspiration to women and young lawyers across Nigeria.

The firm wished her continued good health, peace and fulfilment as she marked another year of a life devoted to the advancement of law and justice.
