The Federal Government of Nigeria has yet to implement the increased monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, which was announced on September 25th, 2024.
The stipend was set to increase from N33,000 to N77,000 effective July 2024, in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
However, corps members confirmed they received only N33,000 for October instead of the approved N77,000. Many expressed frustration on social media, stating the current allowance is insufficient to cover basic expenses like transportation.
NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed attributed the delay to the government not yet releasing the necessary funds. He also disclosed that NYSC staff have not received their own salary increases from 4-5 months ago due to lack of funds.
The government has not provided an updated timeline for when corps members can expect to start receiving the increased N77,000 monthly allowance that was promised.
