*Says “Senators, House Of Assembly Members Don’t Buy Vehicles From Us Because We Write The Actual Price On Our Invoices”

A prominent Nigerian businessman, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, has said that officials of a state government demanded that he double the value of invoices for vehicles his company supplied, and that he lost the business after refusing.
Dr. Cosmas Maduka made the remarks in a video shared by @maintainboo0147, the social media handle of Emmanuel Sunday, a Nigerian online curator and entertainment blogger, in which he described the demand as the most recent example of a pattern he says keeps public sector business away from his company.
“Let me share the most recent one,” he said. “Not the current governor of Plateau State, but the one before, wanted us to supply vehicles. And we delivered vehicles.”
“And they wanted me to inflate invoices of vehicles of 40 million to write 80 million. I told them I don’t do it.”
Asked whether he was serious, he replied: “Yes, of course. I said, sorry, I don’t do it.”
He said the response was an ultimatum. “They said, if you don’t do it, you don’t have business. I said, okay, good luck. I left.”
The businessman said the transaction proceeded without him, through an intermediary who bought the same vehicles from his company at the price his company had quoted.
“Somebody else had to buy those cars and inflated the invoice. He bought it from us and paid us at our own invoice,” he said.
“And they did it.”
He said the episode is not isolated, and put a question to his interviewer about the composition of his customer base among public officials.
“There are many of them. Have you heard that any senator came to buy a vehicle from us, or House of Assembly members? Even when they bought Range Rovers,” he said.
“But they can’t buy from us, because we will write the amount we sell it for in the invoice.”
Asked whether he was serious, he continued: “So therefore they can’t buy from us. They have to go through a third party. They even don’t know we are the brand representative, we are the agent. Why would the business not come to us?”
The businessman did not name any individual. His reference is to the administration preceding the present one in the state, and the demand he describes is attributed to officials rather than to any named person. No allegation in the account has been tested by any authority, and no response has been obtained from the administration concerned or from any of the officials it refers to.
TheNigeriaLawyer’s findings identify the immediate past governor of Plateau State as Simon Lalong, a lawyer and senator. However, Cosmas Maduka did not mention Lalong by name or directly accuse him of making the alleged demand.
