The death has been announced of Mrs. Grace Ogbemi, Nigeria’s first female lawyer from the Mid-West Region, who passed away in Lagos on July 5, 2025, just six days before her 90th birthday.

Born July 11, 1935, in Warri, Delta State, to Chief Reece Edukugho, Mrs. Ogbemi made history in 1958 when she was called to the English Bar, becoming the first female legal practitioner from what is today Edo and Delta states.
A proud Itsekiri woman, Mrs. Ogbemi blazed trails in both law and politics. She was a partner in the law firm of Godfrey Amachree Ogbemi & Co., where she was widely respected for her commitment to justice and professional excellence.
Married to Franklin Ogbemi, a Chartered Engineer, Mrs. Ogbemi balanced her legal career with active participation in politics and community leadership. She was known for her strong advocacy for women’s rights, education, and regional development in the Niger Delta.
Her death marks the end of an era for many in the legal and political communities who remember her as a pioneer, mentor, and symbol of empowerment.
Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
