United States President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Norway, saying he does not want Norwegian immigrants entering the United States because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump made the remarks on Sunday during a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of the November 3 United States midterm elections, where immigration featured prominently in his address.

During the rally, Trump said he would welcome immigrants from some countries but singled out Norway for exclusion because of his failure to receive the prestigious peace award.

“Because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” Trump said.

He also launched a vulgar attack on the Scandinavian country, saying: “Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shit house country, actually.”

Trump’s comments came as he blamed immigration for unrest in parts of Europe and contrasted countries from which he said he would welcome immigrants with those he viewed unfavourably.

However, despite the President’s remarks, there was no indication that his administration had introduced or was implementing any new official immigration policy specifically restricting Norwegian nationals from entering the United States.

The latest attack is part of Trump’s continuing frustration over his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly argued that his diplomatic record entitled him to the award.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was instead awarded to South African judge and former United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay.

Trump has criticised that decision and earlier this month described his failure to receive the award as an “indelible stain” on Norway.

His criticism, however, has prompted renewed clarification from Norwegian officials that the country’s government does not determine who receives the Nobel Peace Prize.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded on Monday by stressing that the Norwegian Nobel Committee operates independently of the government.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering — and that is still the case,” Eide told Norwegian national broadcaster NRK.

The Norwegian government did not announce any retaliatory action following Trump’s comments.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which selects the recipient of the Peace Prize, is based in Oslo but functions independently in making its decisions.

Trump’s latest description of Norway also attracted attention because of the country’s economic standing.

Norway ranks among the world’s highest-income countries when measured by gross domestic product per capita.

Its sovereign wealth fund, one of the largest investment funds in the world, recorded a profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns, approximately $184.3 billion, during the first half of 2026.

Trump has previously used similarly vulgar descriptions when speaking about other countries, including Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

The Norway remarks therefore extend a pattern of provocative language by the President while also directly linking his personal dissatisfaction with the Nobel Peace Prize decision to immigration rhetoric.

The President has continued to make immigration one of the central themes of his political messaging ahead of the midterm elections, arguing for stricter controls while indicating that he considers immigrants from some countries more desirable than others.

At the Michigan rally, however, his exclusion of Norway was explicitly tied to the Nobel Prize rather than to the announcement of any formal immigration measure.
