The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has issued its preliminary report on the derailment of a passenger train at Asham Station along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, which occurred on 26 August 2025.

According to the Bureau, the incident involved train number AK 1, operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) with locomotive registration CDD5c2 2701. The train departed Idu Station in Abuja at 9:45 a.m. en route to Rigasa Station in Kaduna, carrying 618 people, including crew, security personnel, and service staff.

The derailment took place at about 11:09 a.m., shortly after the train passed a manually operated switch point at Asham Station, located at kilometre 49 along the Kubwa–Asham section in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The forward locomotive and several adjoining coaches were thrown off the tracks and overturned.

While 21 passengers sustained varying degrees of injury, no fatalities were recorded. Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to provide medical care and evacuate passengers to safety.

The NSIB explained that the preliminary report contains initial findings and is subject to further investigation. It noted that the final report will give a comprehensive account of the derailment, including its probable causes and safety recommendations aimed at preventing future incidents.

The Bureau, which made the preliminary report available on its official website, reaffirmed its role as Nigeria’s multimodal transport safety agency mandated to conduct independent and thorough investigations into accidents across all modes of transport.

A statement signed by the NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, urged the public and media to access the full report online. She assured that the Bureau remains committed to promoting safety standards and ensuring continuous improvements across the country’s transport sector.
