Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has called for the urgent implementation of fair remuneration for lawyers in paid employment, insisting that justice cannot thrive when practitioners are underpaid.

Akangbe, who recalled his efforts while leading the NBA Lagos Branch, noted that he established a Remuneration Committee chaired by Mr. Anthony Nwaochei, with a mandate to empirically determine a fair living wage for employed lawyers.

He explained that the work of the committee was later expanded during the administration of former NBA President, Olumide Akpata, under whom a white paper on the matter was adopted by the association’s National Executive Council (NEC).

However, Akangbe stressed that adoption without implementation defeats the purpose, adding that now is the time to act.

“To truly give employed lawyers a sense of dignity and inclusion, we must revisit those decisions,” he stated. “After all, what is justice worth if lawyers cannot live their best lives?”

The Senior Advocate urged the NBA to prioritize the welfare of its members, describing fair pay as central to justice delivery and professional dignity.
