The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called for restraint and fairness in the responses to allegations circulating on international platforms and social media claiming that there is an ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by the Deputy National Legal Adviser, Imam Haroun Muhammad Eze, the Council expressed appreciation for the refutations issued by various government agencies and patriotic groups. It said these efforts were driven by a sense of national duty to counter false and damaging narratives promoted by foreign interests.
The NSCIA cautioned Nigerians with “hidden motives” who continue to spread such divisive and misleading claims, warning that they only serve as tools for foreign vested interests seeking to destabilize the country.
Citing credible international reports, the Council referenced the U.S. State Department’s 2023 Report on International Religious Freedom, which noted that terrorists, bandits, and armed criminal groups in Nigeria target both mosques and churches indiscriminately. The report also observed that in the first half of 2025 alone, hundreds of people were killed across Northern Nigeria — a region predominantly populated by Muslims — leaving thousands displaced and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Similarly, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) 2025 Annual Report was said to have acknowledged that attacks in Nigeria have affected adherents of both major faiths.
The Council emphasized the need for fairness and objectivity in national discourse, stressing that “balanced reporting and responsible commentary” are essential to preventing wrongful victimization and promoting unity among Nigerians.
Reaffirming its belief in the unity and indivisibility of the country, the NSCIA stated its unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project. “The Council strongly believes in one and indivisible Nigeria and will continue to work to preserve this ideal, even in the face of the greatest provocation,” the statement concluded.
